Former Department of Emergency Management Director Vicki Hennessy endorses Captain Paul Miyamoto for SF Sheriff!

Hennessy had brought an unheard of level of stability to the department – which oversees the 911 call center and administers federal Homeland Security dollars.

The Department of Emergency Management consists of two divisions.

The Division of Emergency Communications (DEC) provides 9-1-1 emergency dispatch services for Police, Fire, and the Emergency Medical System.

The Division of Emergency Services (DES) coordinates disaster preparation and response planning in partnership with City agencies, non-profit entities, schools and the private sector.

DES also houses the Emergency Medical Services Agency (EMSA), which coordinates all of the components of the City’s prehospital care system.

This is a campaign which represents Experience and Not Politics!

With over 15 years of experience in the Sheriff’s Department, Captain Paul Miyamoto knows what works and what doesn’t.

Captain Paul Michael Miyamoto is a San Francisco native, with a Chinese-American mother and Japanese-American father. He has served in the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department (SFSD) for 15 years. Throughout his career, Paul has shown a great capacity for leadership. In addition to being a supervisor in the jails, he has served as manager of the training unit, the investigations unit, and the institutional patrol unit at San Francisco General Hospital. As a Captain, Paul has been responsible for managing both the department’s maximum security jail, and since 2009, managing the largest jail that offers programs and education for those incarcerated. Since 2005, he has served as the Commander of the Department’s Special Response Team, which handles emergencies requiring special weapons and tactics training. He has also served as Operations Lieutenant both at the oldest County Jail, and the opening of the newest Jail at San Bruno. In addition, he was a team leader in the URBAN SHIELD SWAT team competition from 2007-2009, and participated in the Best in the West SWAT Competition for five years.

Paul has consistently shown his commitment to improving the effectiveness of the SFSD. He has been certified by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training as an instructor for fellow deputies and staff. In addition to his field duties, he has managed the SFSD’s Training Unit and spearheaded the creation of the Department’s Field Training Manual / Field Training Officer Program, which helps streamline and improve the training of new deputies. Paul is also an instructor in Advanced Officer Training in radio communications, racial profiling, tactical/interpersonal communications, and tactical planning, as well as Specialized Training in crowd control and management, WMD first responder operations, incident command, and tactical operations.

Paul has regularly engaged with the San Francisco community outside his duties with the SFSD. Since 1999, he has participated every year in the SFPD’s Lion Dance Team at the annual Chinese New Year Parade. In addition, he has volunteered with Self Help for the Elderly, a non-profit committed to helping low income and isolated seniors by providing social services and hot meals. Paul also volunteers his time coaching basketball both for daughter Melanie’s school team and son Jordan’s league team.

Born in 1967, Paul attended Lowell High in San Francisco before earning his Bachelor’s Degree in History from UC Davis. At the SFPD Police Academy, he was elected President of the 17th Regional Class. Paul met his wife, LeeAnn, in 1996 when both were SFSD Deputies. LeeAnn transferred to SFPD and served the City as a Police Officer for 10 years. They have five children together: Melanie (9), Jordan (7), and triplets Joseph, Marissa, and Maya (3).

The San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs’ Association Endorses Captain Paul Miyamoto for Sheriff!

San Francisco Sheriff

San Francisco Sheriff

SAN FRANCISCO (6/20)- With over 96% of the vote, the San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, has overwhelmingly chosen to throw its support behind Captain Paul Miyamoto to be the next leader of the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department.

The San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs’ Association (SFDSA), represents approximately 800 rank and file Deputy Sheriffs and Senior Deputy Sheriffs, and is one of the largest law enforcement associations in Northern California. We had a large amount of members voting and Paul Miyamoto was given the strongest vote of confidence to date by any candidate. (The vote tally was as follows: 353 votes for Paul Miyamoto, 11 votes for David Wong, 2 votes for Ross Mirkarimi, and 1 vote for Jon Gray.)

The voters of San Francisco are fortunate to have many good candidates running for the position of Sheriff. But, the SFDSA believes that one candidate is better prepared and positioned to lead the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department into the future…and that candidate is Paul Miyamoto.

Captain Paul Miyamoto possesses both the proven leadership skills and the immense experience to guide the Sheriff’s Department in the coming years. During his 15 years in the Sheriff’s Department, Paul has been directly involved in developing and implementing the strategies of Sheriff Hennessey that have been used to promote public safety and maximize efficiencies for the City and County of San Francisco.

In Paul’s role as Captain, he plays a key role in assisting with the Department’s budget, overseeing personnel issues, and being responsible for the overall administration of selected facilities/units that he is assigned to. Paul has worked in many leadership capacities within the department such as: Facility Commander (Custody Division), Special Response Team Commander, Investigative Services Unit Commander (Criminal Investigation & Internal Affairs), Training Unit Manager, and Institutional Patrol Unit Commander.

Paul is a very active member of his community, volunteering his time with Self-Help for the Elderly, a non-profit organization, committed to helping low income and isolated seniors by providing social services and hot meals. Paul also volunteers his time coaching basketball both for his daughter Melanie’s school team and son Jordan’s league team.

As a Captain in the Sheriff’s Department, Paul is well respected in law enforcement circles and understands the importance of maintaining effective relationships with other agencies, which increases the effectiveness of the Sheriff’s Department and the level of public service that can be offered to the citizens of San Francisco

To ensure that the illustrious legacy of the great Sheriff Michael Hennessey does not fade, we ask that others join the SFDSA in supporting a candidate from within the Department, who worked his way up the ranks and was promoted by Sheriff Hennessey at every rank. We see the qualities that Sheriff Hennessey has seen in Paul, as he promoted him through the ranks…great character, integrity, honesty, leadership and experience.

In short, Paul has already experienced many of the types of challenges that the Department will face in the future, and we believe this experience will serve the citizens of the City and County of San Francisco very well. For Paul, working for the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department has not only just been a job to him, but a career and a way of life. The San Francisco Sheriff’s Department is his family. That is why the men and women of the San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs’ Association are committed to seeing that Captain Paul Miyamoto becomes the next elected Sheriff for the City and County of San Francisco. Let’s make this election about Public Safety…Not Popularity. Let’s focus on Experience…Not Politics. Ask yourself: Who is Right for the Job…Not Who Wants the Job. Please join the dedicated men and women of the San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs’ Association in supporting Paul Miyamoto for Sheriff.

CAPTAIN PAUL MIYAMOTO COMMENTS ON OPPONENT’S ENDORSEMENT

-SFPD Captain Greg Corrales Drops out of Sheriff’s Race; Endorses Miyamoto-

San Francisco, CA – Statement by Captain Paul Miyamoto on receiving the endorsement of SFPD Captain Greg Corrales:

“This endorsement is huge.  Greg has over 40 years of law enforcement experience and I’m honored that I’ve earned his support.  I’m so thankful for Greg’s blessing because it really shows the extent of the momentum and excitement that our message of law enforcement experience is generating amongst rank and file officers.  I am the only candidate for Sheriff who has experience on the ground and in command positions.  Voters now will have an absolutely clear choice between the background of a politician activist on the one hand and a career law enforcement officer on the other.”
